fourth-rate god

The Shape of Water

The expression “fourth-rate god” captures the uneasy mixture of authority, fallibility, and self-awareness in Salvo Montalbano’s final act. Livia uses it to mock his promotion, as she sees it, from inspector to someone who has taken godlike power into his own hands; Montalbano later concedes that her judgment was right even as he stands by the conclusion he reached.

Livia’s Rebuke

After Montalbano confirms that he left something where it was, Livia breaks a long silence by accusing him of having promoted himself. Her phrase “a fourth-rate god” punctures the grandeur of the role: he may have acted with extraordinary discretion, but he is no infallible authority. The humor is affectionate but pointed, turning the language of divinity into a criticism of a policeman who has crossed beyond ordinary procedure.

The Phrase at the Ending

The expression returns in Montalbano’s thoughts after he leaves the airport. He drives for roughly sixty miles, stops beside an artificial lake, takes Giorgio’s neck brace from the trunk, throws it into the water, and waits for it to sink. Only then does he smile. He acknowledges that he wanted to act like a god and that Livia had been right to call him a fourth-rate one; nevertheless, he believes he guessed correctly. The act and the phrase meet in a deliberate tension: his decision is consequential and deliberate, but his own account of it refuses to make him either omniscient or wholly comfortable with his power.

Narrative Significance

The expression gives the ending a compact measure of Montalbano’s moral position. His smile follows the disposal of the neck brace, yet the narration keeps Livia’s skeptical description beside his confidence in his deduction. “Fourth-rate” therefore does not simply diminish him: it marks the limits of his authority while preserving the importance of what he has understood. The novel closes not with a claim to divine certainty, but with a fallible investigator acting on a conclusion he believes to be right.
